Rio Tinto Dreamtime Indigenous Team
NRL stars Greg Inglis, Preston Campbell, Johnathan Thurston, Matt Bowen and Dean Widders have signed thousands of jerseys during their careers - but none have meant more to the Indigenous community than those that are being auctioned from today.
The players - who together form the NRL Indigenous Player Advisory Group -- are establishing a mentoring program with the Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre, a registered training organisation and registered charity that delivers mentoring and leadership programs for Indigenous communities.
The program will link in to the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience where University students volunteer to mentor young male and female Indigenous students in secondary schools.
The player-driven program will also assist the ARL Development in their Indigenous development programs.
To aid the program, the Rio Tinto Dreamtime Indigenous Team and the Indigenous members of the VB Kangaroos are providing a series of auction items to be sold on www.graysonline.com.au from today.
The main auction item will be a five-piece mural of the 'Rainbow Serpent' to be autographed by all 18 members of the Rio Tinto Indigenous Dreamtime Team, plus coach Neil Henry and Indigenous VB Kangaroos Inglis, Thurston and Scott Prince.
Recognised Aboriginal artist Bronwyn Bancroft was commissioned to create the mural specifically for the World Cup.
It will also come with a DVD of Campbell and Inglis conducting the traditional "Acknowledgement of Country" and reading the Rainbow Serpent story in a piece to be broadcast at the ground.
Other auction items include:
1. Individual autographed jerseys of each of the Rio Tinto Indigenous Dreamtime Team players as worn in the 'Welcome to Country Game' against New Zealand Maori. The individual jerseys will be signed by (from 1-18) Rhys Wesser, Justin Carney, Maurice Blair, Jamal Idris, Ty Williams, Jamie Soward, Preston Campbell, George Rose, Ian Lacey, Carl Webb, Derricke Watkins, Daine Laurie, Dean Widders, Chris Sandow, Yileen Gordon, Rod Jensen, Peter Jensen and Denis Moran;
2. Individual Dreamtime jerseys signed by Indigenous VB Kangaroo members Greg Inglis, Johnathan Thurston and Scott Prince;
3. One Dreamtime jersey signed by the entire team plus the VB Kangaroo members;
4. One Dreamtime jersey signed by captain Preston Campbell and VB Kangaroos captain Darren Lockyer;
