August 5, 2009
Dragons Stars Matt Cooper and Michael Weyman today joined Judith Nicholson from the Department of Education and Training in Wollongong for the official launch of "Dragons in the Classroom" - an exciting and interactive educational resource for Primary School students.
The St George Illawarra Dragons in conjunction with the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET) and Harpers Educational Network have worked together to produce "Dragons in the Classroom" - a booklet especially designed for Stage 2 and 3 Primary School Students.
"Education and Health are key pillars within our Dragons Community program and the Dragons in the Classroom booklet is a modern resource with a Dragons flavour designed to fit the education curriculum, for Stage 2 & 3 Primary School students," said Dragons CEO Peter Doust.
"We recognise that our players are role models within our community and have the ability to positively influence students," added Doust. "We are very proud of this initiative and are delighted to think that we can assist with the learning's of Primary School students across our region".
Fifteen thousand copies of the resource are being distributed free of charge to 200 schools across the Dragons region, from Kogarah in the North, to Batemans Bay in the South. The resource and accompanying activities are also available to download free online through the Dragons website www.dragons.com.au
"The 'Dragons in the Classroom' program lends itself to engage many students at
Bellambi Public School and will be a valuable resource for us," added Bellambi Public School teacher Rebekah Clarke. "The program's direct link to the Dragons promotes learning for our children through their love for Rugby League and engages them in the learning through a common interest."
Dragons in the Classroom and Rugby League Reads are part of the Education Pillar of Dragons Community.
Dragons Community is a strategic initiative of the St George Illawarra Dragons that encompasses eight pillars: Health, Education, Mentoring, Women & Girls, Charity, Grassroots Rugby League, Cultural and Environmental. It is a comprehensive and sustainable program that aims to have a positive impact on people's lives within our community that stretches from Kogarah in the north to Batemans Bay in the south of New South Wales.
