Girls Rugby League came to a close for the 2012 season last Friday after 2 weeks of carnivals in Brisbane and Toowoomba sponsored by the Broncos & the Titans.
65 teams and some 800 girls from 10-18 years of age played Rugby League across 3 massive events. From the wind and cold in Toowoomba to the heat and dry conditions in north Brisbane, the girls played strong and showed that they can match the skills of the boys in the Greatest Game of All.
Girls ran, kicked, tackled and scored their way through the games with courage and determination. Young Titans players were on hand to witness the skill shown by the girls and were thrilled to see the girls having a go at Rugby League.
In the Broncos Primary School Challenge Division A Champions, Central District had their own competition alongside the boys this year and this showed in their match fitness and teamwork. Division B Champions, Hervey Bay travelled to Brisbane to compete having just competed in the Wide Bay Primary Girls Carnival a few weeks prior and were heading back to Hervey Bay to compete in the Hervey Bay Zone Carnival. The girls certainly love their footy!
The Broncos Secondary Schoolgirl Challenge saw 25 teams compete with Central QLD United from Rockhampton taking out the Under 14’s Division. Wavell State High School were convincing winners of the Under 16’s Division and Merrimac State High School from the Gold Coast won the Open Schoolgirls after having teams in all divisions as well as helping out traveling teams from South Western QLD.
The Titans Challenge was the first of its kind for Toowoomba and did not disappoint. With the cold and windy conditions not allowing us to even put up tents, it did not take the girls long to warm into their games against other girls that share the passion to play footy. Kruger State School won the Under 12’s Division, with Merrimac State High School winning the Under 15’s & Open Schoolgirls Divisions.
