Learning with League Centre – Program Overview

At the Learning with League Centre, students will have the opportunity to participate in activities with a focus on Literacy, Personal Development and Health and PBL.

Students will engage in these activities to coincide with general positive characteristics of Rugby League including teamwork, support, encouragement, healthy lifestyles and determination.

The 3 main focus areas of the program are values, teamwork and respect.

Through role plays, group work and mini challenges, students will be encouraged to explore and develop their skills in decision making, comprehension, problem solving and communication.

The morning session will consist of a Literacy block, using Rugby League Reads magazines and Rugby League themed resources. It is a rotation style arrangement where students move between activities, utilising their Talking and Listening, Reading and Writing skills.

Activity 1 – That’s my team!
Using the SMART board, students will work together to create their own NRL team - they will name their new team, design an outfit (jersey, shorts and socks) and create a mascot to represent their team. The group will also work together to create the chorus for a team song or write a creative poem about their new team i.e. An Acrostic poem

Activity 2 – Become a fan!
Using Football Codes: Rugby League and examples of banners from football matches as a guide, students will create their own banner for an NRL team (Acrostic poem, alliteration, using a player’s name).

Activity 3 – Your game, your culture
(Explanation/Description writing)
Reading ‘Yulunga’ from the All Stars Edition of Rugby League Reads and using it as an example of a cultural tradition, students will select either the Explanation or Description proforma in their work booklet and write about their own cultural tradition – games, celebrations or dances.

The afternoon session is where students will take part in different role play scenarios, titled Learning with League TV!

This session is based on interviews, panel style discussions and the ‘five in the bin’ concept from The Footy Show, where students will either re-enact the scenario or re-create their own performance.
Using media props, NRL merchandise and other Rugby League apparel, students will dress up to help create a realistic experience.

Each activity is linked to the NSW Curriculum and based on outcomes from the NSW Syllabus.
